            SERVICE RECEIVE & PASSING

1.  Want the ball to come to you.  Know who is responsible for the ball in certain areas.  Trust your teammates.  Back up the passers just in case.

2.  Before the serve, be about one step behind the position you want to be in.  As you learn to take more balls with your hands, you can move up and make the court seem smaller.

3.    As the server swings / tosses (Before the ball is contacted by the server) - Take two quick steps into position--either forward or side-to-side. Weight on insides of feet.  With one foot in front of your body and the other just a little back.  Not both under shoulders.

4.     Have hands in ready position (Split apart just above knees)--weight leaning forward.

5.  As you see the ball coming over—make decision whether speed is fast or slow. Is trajectory high or low ?

6.   Decide whether to take the ball with your hands or arms

         a.   If high easy floater or high easy top spin---

            Hands

1.        get underneath & pass with hands to setter by:

    A.  Feet shoulder width apart.  Knees bent.  Elbows extended about 85-90 percent.  Hands in front forming a spade shape and flat as if against a wall. The faster the ball is coming the closer you want your hands to be from each other.  If the serve is a top spin, simply get fingers higher above the ball.

    B.  Take ball in front of body, make sure torso is facing target, and practice arcs.

    C.  Take step toward and as ball hits resistant hands make hands motion to target.

Arms

2.        get in position & pass with arms to setter by:

    A.  Having arms positioned at the angle which will best get ball height desired.

    B.  As ball comes near, move body into ball using legs and hips.  Keep arms at angle. Don't swing arms.  Make sure ball hits between wrist and just below inner elbow area. Not on thumbs.

    C.  If topspin,  make pulling back motion to counteract spin.  If floater, keep arms still.  Shrug shoulders if more height needed.

b.       if hard floater & ball is high enough

1.        make fingers strong & hand-pass ball by:

    A.  After deciding where ball will be coming down, move into position.  Face your body in such a way that your chest is toward the setter's position.

    B.  Feet shoulder width apart.  Knees bent.  Elbows fully extended in front and up.  Palms facing out.  Fore fingers about 1 inch apart and at 45 degree angle.  Thumbs about 1 inch apart and parallel to ground.  Space between hands looks like a spade from a deck of cards.

    C.  Allow ball to hit in spade area, causing wrists to flex back some.  Move legs and hips toward target for more arc.

2.       Using arms--Move up on ball & play higher off arms

    A.  See Above.  Move body into ball.  Do not swing arms or move arms with shoulders.

c.        If hard topspin

1.        make a good platform angle & take with arms by:

    A.  See Above.  Relax arms and even bend elbows slightly to soften pass,  and make pulling back motion to take off the spin for your setter.

         d.  If Short Serve where you have to move inside 10ft. line and take with arms, just before you take the ball with your arms, curl your wrists up where your thumbs are pointing upward.  Have the ball hit on the down angle of your thumbs on to your lower wrists causing the ball to spin and go almost straight up.

7.  You never want to hit or swing at the serve—pass it--Move in to it! Use a step to move closer to ball.

                                  Advanced Passing

Adv 1.  When taking serve –whether with hands or arms

a.        Move body in a position where there is a straight pass to setter (position)

b.       Get your body frame behind ball (linear)

c.        Set arm angle middle or side (non-linear)

            1)  Non-Linear  means passing platform is not in line with body frame and target

            2)  Step to the side the ball is coming to and drop inside shoulder to create angle needed

            3)  When going to one knee on the floor for a low ball, make sure arms don't get caught inside knees.

If all else fails----just get the ball up high in the air

Karch Kiraly says:

Get in a great ready position for moving to the ball

Don't worry about centering yourself on the ball

Even if you take the ball from one side or another, aim for a certain spot along the net.

Try to make the pass to the same place with the same trajectory every single time

Allow your setter to anticipate where to receive the set, make their job easier

Try and take the spin off the serve when using your arms, by shooting your arms forward or pulling them back as the counter to the spin dictates.  Back if topspin, shoot forward if backspin

More to come.
